If you are tied into a HubSpot contract and it is no longer working for your business, don't panic. You may not be able to cancel immediately, but there can still be a practical way forward.

Quick answer

You normally cannot cancel a paid HubSpot subscription part-way through its commitment term. Check your contract length, renewal date and auto-renewal settings first. If you cannot leave immediately, there may still be a practical way forward by reducing your HubSpot commitment at renewal and moving your team to a simpler CRM.

  • Check the difference between your billing cycle and commitment term.
  • Confirm your renewal date and turn off auto-renewal in time.
  • Missing the renewal point can mean another commitment term.
  • Plan what happens to your tools and data before the subscription ends.
  • If you cannot leave yet, there may still be a lower-cost route forward.

Overview

Can I cancel HubSpot before my contract ends?

Start by checking your commitment term, renewal date and downgrade options.

And if none of those solves the problem, there may still be a way to move your team onto a simpler CRM without increasing your overall software spend.

Here are five things to check.

01 · Commitment

1. Check your HubSpot commitment term

The first thing to understand is the difference between your billing cycle and your commitment term.

You might be paying monthly, but that does not always mean you are on a monthly commitment.

HubSpot says Starter subscriptions can have monthly or annual commitments, while Professional and Enterprise subscriptions require annual commitments.

That means your first job is to confirm:

  • which HubSpot products you have
  • whether each one is monthly or annual
  • when the commitment term ends
  • whether there are any separate add-ons or seats attached to it

Action: Open your HubSpot billing area and write down the end date of every paid commitment.

Do not assume that a monthly payment means you can simply stop next month.

02 · Renewal

2. Check your renewal date and give notice in time

If you do not want HubSpot to renew for another term, you need to act before the current term ends.

HubSpot subscriptions automatically renew unless you turn off auto-renewal before the next renewal term begins. If you miss that point, the subscription can roll into another renewal term, which may mean another year depending on your current commitment.

That is why this date matters so much. Do not leave it until the last minute.

Action: Check:

  • your exact renewal date
  • whether auto-renewal is currently turned on
  • how long the next renewal term will be
  • whether your Order Form contains any different notice requirements

Then put a reminder in your calendar 60 to 90 days before renewal.

That gives you time to review your costs, compare alternatives and make a decision before you accidentally roll into another term.

03 · Leaving early

3. Understand whether you can leave early

For most paid subscriptions, HubSpot does not allow you to simply cancel part-way through the commitment term.

That means if you are still inside the agreed period, you will normally remain liable for the payments until the term ends.

There can be limited contractual circumstances where early termination rights apply, but these are specific and should not be assumed.

If you believe HubSpot has breached the agreement or there is another contractual issue, check the terms carefully and take appropriate legal advice if needed.

Action: Treat early cancellation as the exception, not the default.

Plan around the commitment term unless you have a clear contractual reason to do otherwise.

04 · Tools and data

4. Check what happens to your tools and data when you cancel

Before cancelling or downgrading, make sure you understand what features and data will be affected when the paid subscription ends.

The key thing is to identify anything you need to keep and make sure it is exported before access or functionality changes.

Do not leave this until the last day.

Action: Make a list of the data, files, workflows and reports your business relies on.

Then use the separate guide: How do I export my data from HubSpot? A practical checklist before you leave

That guide will cover what to export, what may need rebuilding and how to prepare the data for your next CRM.

05 · Your next CRM

5. Start planning your replacement before the contract ends

If HubSpot is no longer the right fit, you do not need to wait until the final week of the contract to start looking at alternatives.

Use the remaining time to work out what you actually need from your next CRM.

That gives you time to:

  • clean your data
  • identify active opportunities
  • review your pipelines
  • test alternative CRMs
  • train your team
  • plan the switch properly

The goal is to make the move calmly rather than under pressure.

Action: Start comparing alternatives before renewal, not after it.

That gives you time to choose the right tool rather than simply the fastest one to implement.

Your options

If you still can't cancel, there may still be a way forward

If you cannot cancel HubSpot immediately and you still have time left on the contract, that does not necessarily mean you have to keep using it as your main CRM.

One option is to reduce your HubSpot commitment as far as your contract and renewal terms allow, then move your day-to-day sales and marketing activity onto a CRM that is a better fit for a small business.

For some businesses, the combined cost of:

a reduced HubSpot commitment + a simpler CRM

can still be lower than what they were paying for HubSpot originally.

That means you may be able to move forward without increasing your overall software spend.

You could:

  • move your team onto a simpler CRM
  • stop forcing a system that is no longer working
  • use the remaining HubSpot term only where necessary
  • avoid increasing your overall monthly software cost
  • complete the move properly when the HubSpot commitment ends

The key is to work out the numbers. Compare:

  1. What you are paying HubSpot now

  2. The lowest HubSpot cost you can realistically move to

  3. The cost of the replacement CRM

popcorn CRM is designed for small businesses that want CRM, sales and marketing joined up without the complexity of a larger platform.

The paid CRM plan is £59 a month for one user, with all dashboard, sales and marketing features included. A three-user team pays £99 a month, excluding VAT.

So if you can reduce the HubSpot cost and move your active sales process onto popcorn, the combined cost may still be lower than what you were paying before.

Summary

Quick checklist: before you cancel HubSpot

Check:

  • What is your commitment term?
  • When is your renewal date?
  • Is auto-renewal turned on?
  • How long would the next renewal term be?
  • Can anything be downgraded?
  • What data do you need to keep?
  • Which workflows or reports do you rely on?
  • What CRM will replace HubSpot?
  • Can you start the move before the contract ends?
  • Could a reduced HubSpot cost plus a simpler CRM still cost less overall?

Frequently asked questions

Can I cancel HubSpot before my contract ends?

Usually, no. HubSpot says paid subscriptions normally remain in place until the end of the current commitment term. You can turn off auto-renewal so the subscription ends at the renewal date, but you will generally continue paying until the existing term finishes unless a specific contractual termination right applies.

Does cancelling HubSpot stop payments immediately?

Usually not. Cancelling normally means the subscription will end at the next renewal date rather than stopping immediately. If you are still inside a commitment term, you will generally remain responsible for payments until that term finishes.

How do I stop HubSpot automatically renewing?

Check your HubSpot billing settings and make sure auto-renewal is turned off before the renewal deadline. It is sensible to review this well in advance, ideally 60 to 90 days before renewal, so you have time to downgrade, export data or move to another CRM if needed.

What happens to my account after I cancel HubSpot?

When a paid HubSpot subscription ends, the account may move onto HubSpot's free tools. Some paid features, limits and functionality will no longer be available, so it is important to review what you use and export any important data before the paid subscription ends.

Can I get a refund if I cancel HubSpot early?

HubSpot generally does not refund unused fees simply because you decide to leave before the commitment term ends. Any exception would depend on the specific contract terms and circumstances, so check your agreement carefully if you believe there is a contractual reason for early termination.
